Rev. Gerhard A. Poehlmann (Pastor)

The Rev. Gerhard A. Poehlmann came to the Trinity Lutheran-Zion Lutheran parish from Paige, Texas.  He was installed as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, San Antonio by Rev. E. A. Sagebiel, president of the Texas District of the American Lutheran Church on August 2, 1937.

Rev. Poehlmann was born in Avery, Oklahoma on October 9, 1910.  He graduated from Texas Lutheran College, Seguin, Texas and studied for the ministry at Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa.  He was ordained as a pastor in the American Lutheran Church July 15, 1934.

His first pastorate was at St. John Lutheran Church, Paige, Texas where he served two years before coming to San Antonio.  While at Paige, Rev. Poehlmann was married to Marion Stuermer on October 4, 1934.  Two sons and one daughter were born to the couple.

Pastor Poehlmann served Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes as part of his duties as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church.  In 1936 the District Mission Committee decided to divide the Harlandale-Helotes parish.  However, Pastor Poehlmann continued to serve Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes until Rev. A. B. Weiss was installed, May 3, 1937.

After leaving Trinity Lutheran Church he served Bethany Lutheran Church, Fredericksburg, Texas and First Lutheran Church, Corpus Christi, Texas.

Throughout his career Rev. Poehlmann served as Conference Secretary, Chairman of the San Antonio Local Conference, Area Director of Lutheran World Action, Board of Grace Lutheran Sanatorium, and on numerous other committees.

Rev. Poehlmann retired from active ministry on November 1, 1975. He passed away January 26, 2000.

October 9, 1910 - January 26, 2000

Gerhard August Poehlmann was born to Pastor H.C. and Louise Riehl Poehlmann in Avery, OK.  While he was an infant, the Poehlmann family moved to New Wehdem, near Brenham, TX, where Pastor Poehlmann served the congregation of the local Lutheran church.  Gerhard attended school in Meyersville and Yorktown.  He attended Texas Lutheran College for its two year curriculum, and then attended Wartburg Semnary to begin his long and illustrous career in Lutheran ministry.  During nearly 45 years of active ministry, Gerhard served congregations in San Antonio, Fredericksburg, Corpus Christi, and retired to Victoria, TX in 1975.  In 1992, the Pastor moved to Sequin (TX), where he lived for five years until his move to Clifton Lutheran Suset Home in 1997.  In 1934, he married Marion Steumer of Yorktown.  Gerhard and Marion had three children, Doctor Kurt Steumer Poehlmann of Ennis, TX;  Doctor William Riehl Poehlmann of Northfield, MN and Mrs. Elizabeth Lour Poehlmann Swanberg of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.  Marion preceded her husband in death in 1984.  Gerhard remarried the former Rita Egg in 1988.  Rita passed away several months later.  One brother, Melvin; his three children; and four grandchildren survive Pastor Poehlmann.  Nephews of Gerhard will serve as honary pallbearers.  There will be a Visitation Saturday beginning at 5:00 P.M. and ending at 7:00 P.M.  The Service will be held Sunday at 2:30 P.M. at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home.  Burial will be at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery with Reverend Kay Johnson officiating.
