Rev. Robert P. Thronson (Pastor)

Rev. Thronson was installed as part-time assistant pastor of Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes on September 20, 1981 by Rev. Maurice Gold, chairman of the San Antonio Conference of the ALC.

Robert P. Thronson was born August 25, 1940 at Harvey, North Dakota, the son of Paul and Eleanor Thronson.  He graduated with a Bachelor Degree from the College of Great Falls, Montana and from Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio, with a Master of Divinity Degree.  He was ordained at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Great Falls, Montana on July 27, 1969.  He also holds a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Counseling from St. Mary’s University of San Antonio, Texas.

He and Miss Carolyn Andrews were married at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Great Falls, Montana on July 3, 1964.  Two sons were born to the marriage;  Kevin born at Fort Smith, Arkansas and Mark born at Temple, Texas.

Pastor Thronson served congregations in Bartlett, Weslaco and San Antonio, Texas before coming to Zion.  He was serving as part-time assistant pastor when Pastor Probst retired in November 1983.  Pastor Thronson was called as Interim Pastor and served in that capacity until Pastor Kuenemann was called to Zion in August 1984.

He then entered into private practice of counseling that specialized in psychotherapy and marriage and family counseling in the San Antonio area.

Pastor Thronson again joined the Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes staff in part-time status as Minister of Counseling in 1992.  He worked in coutless capacities to bring the special healing presence of this ministry to hundreds and hundreds of our members and their families and acquaintances.  His wonderful gifts of caring and insight not only addressed many complex therapeutic issues, but also were used in Couuple's Retreats, support groups and classes, as well as assisting in other more general pastoral needs. Pastor Thronson resigned from the Minister of Counseling position at the end of March 2000. He is still an active member of Zion.
