Rev. Scott Eric Sorensen (Associate Pastor)

Rev. Scott Eric Sorensen was installed as pastor of Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes on November 28 1993.  Pastor Sorensen joined Pastors Peter Manfred and Robert Thronson on the staff of the largest Evangelical Lutheran Church in America congregation in the San Antonio area.

Rev. Lawrence Bade, assistant to the bishop of Southwestern Texas Synod, presided over the installation.  Five ELCA pastors who are on the staff or are members of Zion: Dr. George Schultz, Rev. Don Luckemeyer, Rev. Malcolm Hoffman, Rev. Thronson and Rev. Manfred also participated.

Pastor Sorensen was born in Coronado, California while his father was stationed there in the Navy.  He was raised in southern California attending elementary and high school at Huntington Beach, California.  He graduated cum laude from California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, California in 1980 with a B.A. in History.  From there he attended Luther Northwestern Theological Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota graduating in 1984 with a master of divinity degree.  His year of internship was spent in Davenport in rural Eastern Washington.  He was ordained at Grace Lutheran Church in Huntington Beach, California on September 9, 1984.

His first ministry was as assistant pastor at Mount Carmel Lutheran Church in San Luis Obispo, California.  While at Mount Carmel he served on the local ecumenical commission and was part of the Synod Youth Committee.  He also served as campus pastor for National Lutheran Campus Ministries at California Polytechnic State University during his five years at Mount Carmel.

It was while working at the 1988 Youth Gathering, that he met Kathryn Hassel.  After his engagement to Kathy in 1989, he moved to Dallas, Texas where he and Kathy were married in January 1990.  He was called to be a pastor on staff at King of Glory (KOG), Dallas, in the position of Director of Family Ministries.  His duties at KOG included: singles ministries, youth ministries, and family ministries.  Family Ministries included young couples through OWLS (Older Wiser LutheranS, a 55+ fellowship and study group.  During his tenure at KOG he organized a congregational effort to build a Habitat for Humanity house.  That project started the congregation's on-going relationship with Habitat.

Pastor Sorensen has a deep knowledge of various worship styles from "High Mass" to contemporary.  He was a guest preacher for congregations and youth events, including on stage as a Biblical Storyteller at the 1997 National Youth Gathering in New Orleans.  He has had several sermons and articles on Singles Ministry and Education Ministry published.

During his ministry at Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes Pastor Sorensen held leadership responsibilities in all areas of ministry with added focus on youth, education and evangelism.  An extensive building project was also begun at Zion during his tenure.  He served the national church (ELCA) as a Program Team Leader for the ELCA National Youth Gathering held June-July, 2000 in St. Louis, Missouri.

Pastor Sorensen received and accepted a call as Senior Pastor at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sacramento, California in April 1999.  He preached his last sermons at Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes on May 30, 1999.
